Thiamine — the nerve and energy vitamin most commonly depleted by alcohol
Thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency can affect neurological function and energy metabolism — and is most common in people with high alcohol intake.
Thiamine is essential for carbohydrate metabolism and nerve function. It is found in whole grains, legumes, meat, and nuts, but is rapidly depleted by alcohol, certain medications, and gastrointestinal conditions that impair absorption. Severe deficiency causes Wernicke's encephalopathy — a serious neurological emergency — and is also associated with peripheral neuropathy, fatigue, and cognitive changes.
